Automotive context-aware policy system for car connectivity requests

Connectivity services now provide a competitive edge in the automotive industry. As the range of automotive applications grows, better policy-based control is needed. This paper proposes a Context-Aware Policy System (CAPS) for the motoring industry, which enables offering advanced communication-based services to a captive customer-base of private and corporate vehicles, particularly to enterprise carfleets.

The automotive manufacturer needs the policy server to provide means of selecting service delivery parameters (urgency/priority, bandwidth/QoS, variable capping limits, and security levels) according to cars’ current situation and the type of requested service. The system is particular useful for large car fleets, where the Enterprise can set their own context-based priorities, selective funding and risk mitigating actions. This requires merging context and policy from several stakeholders: the Carrier, the Automotive Service provider and the Enterprise.
